PRIVACY OF INFORMATION HELD BY THE REGISTRAR
The Office of the Registrar is committed to protecting personal privacy, including all personal information contained in
- the consolidated membership roll of Local Aboriginal Land Councils
- the Register of Aboriginal Owners
- the Register of Aboriginal Land Claims
Personal information in the consolidated membership roll, the Register of Aboriginal Owners and the Aboriginal Land Claims Register is never disclosed to the general public.
WHO CAN ACCESS INFORMATION?
- An individual may make an enquiry only about their personal information in the consolidated membership roll of Local Aboriginal Land Councils.
- LALC Chief Executive Officers may make inquiries about information in the consolidated membership roll concerning members of that land council only.
- Information in the Register of Aboriginal Owners is used only for the purpose of registering an individual as an Aboriginal owner. Personal information is available only to that person on their request. It cannot be accessed by a third party unless the individual concerned has given their consent.
- The Registrar can conduct a search of the Register of Aboriginal Owners to find out if there are Aboriginal owners of a particular area, if asked to do so in relation to the 'Aboriginal cultural heritage consultation requirements for proponents 2010' [PDF].
- Information about an Aboriginal land claim is used by the Registrar only for the purpose of registering a land claim. Information about the claim is available to the claimant land council, the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council and the Department of Primary Industries
- A general search of the Register of Aboriginal Land Claims can be requested but information about individual claims cannot be provided to or accessed by any other party. Request for Search of Land Claims Register form [PDF]
